**Attention All Piatt County Residents: Tornado Sirens - What You Need to Know**Tornado sirens are a crucial part of our community's emergency alert system. They are designed to warn you of imminent tornado threats and give you time to seek shelter. Here's what you need to know to stay safe:Understand the Sound: Tornado sirens emit a loud, continuous tone that can be heard outdoors. The siren is not meant to be heard indoors. If you hear the siren, it means you need to take immediate action to protect yourself and your loved ones.Immediate Action Required: When you hear a tornado siren, immediately seek shelter in a safe location. Ideal shelter locations include:1) A basement or storm cellar2) An interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows (such as a bathroom or closet)3) If you are outdoors and cannot get to a building, find a low-lying area such as a ditch, lie flat, and cover your head.Do Not Ignore the Sirens: Tornado sirens are activated when there is a verified threat of a tornado. Treat every siren activation as a real emergency. Do not wait to see the tornado or for further confirmation before taking action.Sirens are primarily sounded by Piatt County 911 Dispatch Center. Many of the rural Fire Department Chiefs also have that capability. The current guidelines for activating tornado sirens in Piatt County include:1) Tornado warning2) Confirmed tornado seen by a trained weather spotter3) Severe, high speed winds***Piatt County EMA and 911 are in constant contact with the National Weather Service during severe weather events***Also, Please Stay Informed: After seeking shelter, stay informed through a NOAA Weather Radio, local news, weather apps, and/or Piatt County EMA FB page. Sirens are just the first alert; continuous updates will help you stay informed about the threat and when it is safe to leave your shelter. ... See MoreSee Less
